The National Review of monovarietal oils aims to enhance the Italian olive growing heritage and the peculiar characteristics of the native varieties through monovarietal oils. It is not a competition, as there are many nationally and internationally, to evaluate the best and most harmonious oil, but rather aims to make a contribution to the characterization of monovarietal oils obtained from the numerous native Italian varieties, in which the characteristics chemical and organoleptic properties linked to the genetic heritage harmonize with the pedoclimatic characteristics of the territory in which the same varieties have been inserted for centuries. These oils are not comparable and their appreciation often depends on the consumer’s taste and the possibility of using them in combination with this or that dish. Each variety, from the north to the south of Italy, has its own peculiarities (in smells, flavours, acid and phenolic composition), very positive for some aspects, less so for others, but all still valid in their specific cultivation environment, in which area must be promoted and valorised.
Single variety oils represent a starting point for the chemical and sensorial characterization of the product; once their potential has been understood, they can be valorised in purity, trusting in their peculiarities, or in declared blends, with “blend” proposals, to define different types of oil, as well as some of the various DOP/IGP, which respond to the needs of a dynamic, constantly evolving market.

In Abruzzo the Majella Verde LAG, starting from the Province of Pescara, has launched a project that goes in the same direction .

CPT Dritta of the Pescaresi Lands

The headquarters of the CPT “Dritta delle Terre Pescaresi” is at the headquarters of the leader, Associazione Culturale Pleiadi, in Via della Monache n.4 in Loreto Aprutino. The “Terre Pescaresi” GAL has also granted the use of the “Terre dei Vestini” Gallery of Taste in the premises of the former Court of Penne in Largo San Giovanni Battista for the activities. The Galleria del Gusto is the third in Abruzzo after that of the “Province of Chieti” opened in Casoli (CH) in September 2008 and the “Terre Pescaresi” inaugurated in Manoppello (PE) in August 2015. The project was born in Abruzzo within of the local development plans promoted by the LAGs, to create knowledge centers on the culture of the territory and food. The Municipality of Penne accepted the invitation of the GAL Terre Pescaresi to create a space dedicated to food and wine and the territory in the city, inside a building of historical and architectural value. The intervention was financed by the GAL Terre Pescaresi within its Local Development Plan, PSR Abruzzo 2007-2013, with the co-financing of European Community Funds EAFRD.

The weather cooling down and the sea rippling. Everything tells me that winter has arrived for me andthat I must, without delay, harvest my olives andoffer the virgin oil to everyone. ‘altar of the good God.
